Hi! After much contemplation, I’m moving my writing from Blogger to Substack!
When I started a personal website and blog, I was looking for a free, functional platform as I hoped to keep it around for the rest of my life. Blogger was created in 1999 (by Ev Williams, who also later co-founded Twitter and Medium), then acquired by Google in 2003. Google has kept Blogger running and free, and it checked my boxes. But the product has barely been updated over the past decade (I guess the downsides of having no monetization model). My website and newsletters — for both readers and for me as a publisher — have started to feel like a visit to the Internet History Museum.
Substack, on the other hand, is modern, looks and works way better — and also free. It’s also become home to several great writers, essays, and discussions. This place feels alive, and I’ll be in good company. I dragged my feet because I worried that as a VC-funded business, they’d eventually feel the pressure to rug-pull their users, or TikTok-ify their experience. But that hasn’t happened (yet).
I’m excited to pull the trigger and start publishing here! I’ll also be slowly migrating my favorite pieces from Blogger, so don’t be surprised (or annoyed) if you see some repeats.
And most importantly…
Substack supports comments, so I hope you’ll chime in and share your thoughts!
